Class 9 have had an exciting day today, with a visit from Dr. Wise from Lancaster University, leading us in a STEM workshop.
We began with an engineering problem: how can we fit ourselves through a piece of paper using only a pair of scissors? We managed to come up with some solutions before being shown a way of fitting 2 or more people through one piece of paper!
Then, we looked at the chemical engineering processes in making real coffee. This afternoon, we worked in groups to create a new chemical compound that could be used in spacecraft seats to protect astronauts when they return to earth. We tested our compounds by dropping marbles onto them from different heights and measuring the impact crater.
We are looking forward to more science activities during the rest of the week.
