Governors

The Governing Body has corporate responsibility for the effectiveness of the school.  The majority of the Governors are ‘Foundation Governors’, meaning that they are elected or appointed by the local Parochial Church Council (of Holy Trinity, Bolton-le-Sands) or by the Diocese of Blackburn.  The Chair of Governors is Mrs Janet Thompson.

The Governors meet, as a full Board of Governors, on a termly basis. Much of the strategic and day-to-day work of the Governing Body is undertaken via its committees:

Curriculum and Effectiveness Committee:

Chaired by Mrs Jill Milligan, this committee plays a vital role in overseeing the core work of the school. Its primary focus is to challenge and support the Headteacher and staff in delivering an enriched, innovative curriculum that enables all pupils to achieve good or better progress.

The committee works closely with key staff members, including the assessment coordinator, subject leaders, and SEND coordinator, ensuring that every aspect of school life is considered. Regular reports are reviewed on pupil progress across cohorts and specific groups, and the committee collaborates with the Headteacher and staff to set and negotiate key areas for school improvement.

Resources Committee:

Chaired by Mr Brian James, this committee ensures that the school has robust financial management and staffing arrangements in place. It also oversees the evaluation of Health and Safety, ensuring that the school remains a safe and suitable environment for both learning and work.

The committee is responsible for ensuring that all procedures uphold financial integrity and that the school achieves ‘best-value’ solutions when facing challenging funding issues. Additionally, regular inspections of the school site are conducted to maintain safety standards and the efficient management of resources.

Admissions Committee:

As a Voluntary Aided School, we are responsible for managing the admissions process. This committee, chaired by the Headteacher, regularly reviews the school’s admissions policy and procedures, ensuring they are applied fairly when considering applications. The committee works closely with the Blackburn Diocesan Board of Education and Lancashire County Council to meet all statutory requirements, ensuring that the admissions process is compliant, transparent, and effective.

Other statutory committees  meet when necessary and there is also a nominated governor with responsibility for many aspects of life in school (e.g. worship, safeguarding, maths, ICT, governor training etc).
