Sustainability and Climate Action Plan
Our School Bees!
Our school is proud to have a thriving collection of bee hives, cared for by our dedicated beekeepers who work hard to ensure our bees are healthy and flourishing. The hives provide an exciting hands-on learning opportunity, allowing pupils to discover the vital role that bees play in pollination, biodiversity, and food production. By observing the bees and learning about their habitats, children develop a deeper understanding of the natural world and the importance of protecting it. Our bee project also encourages environmental responsibility, inspiring pupils to support wildlife by planting pollinator-friendly flowers, creating habitats for insects, and making sustainable choices. Through this unique experience, our school community is helping to protect an essential species while nurturing a lifelong appreciation for the environment.
Eco Club!
At Eco Club at Bolton-le-Sands, we explore how we, as individuals and as a school community, can help care for our environment and tackle climate change. We have researched local birds and insects, creating bird feeders and bug hotels to support the wildlife around our school. We have also taken part in litter picks to help keep our local area clean and have enjoyed learning about the plants, animals and habitats found both on our school grounds and within the local community. The children have enjoyed getting outdoors and learning about the wildlife around them, while making a positive difference to our school environment and the local area.
Haweswater Class Worship
Haweswater led, this Summer Term, an incredible worship about making good decisions and helping look after our environment. It was filled with great work that we are already doing as a school and gave the school and children even more ideas as to what we can do to make our world a better place.
School Council
Our school council work very hard to live out our school vision, supporting and reaching out in learning, growth and community. They support Children in Need, Red Nose Day as well as supporting the Local Food Bank.
Earth Day and Big Green Week!
This year we have celebrated Earth Day and the Big Green Week. Children were involved in a wide range of activities and the school council worked hard all week supporting our understanding. As part of Big Green Week, what better place for School Council to meet than our amazing outdoor classroom? Made entirely by volunteers, our outdoor space, pond and rainwater storage were created with reclaimed and upcycled materials and donations from local businesses. School council recorded and celebrated what we do as a school to be sustainable.
Gardening Club
Our thriving Gardening Club, gives children the opportunity to develop a love of nature while learning valuable gardening skills. Members learn about local wildlife, help care for and enhance our beautiful school garden, and grow a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. They also nurture our flourishing orchard, which provides delicious fruit each year for our children, with a generous annual donation to the local food bank, helping to support our wider community.
Our School Garden and Outdoor Learning
We are very fortunate at Bolton-le-Sands Primary School to have a beautiful school garden. Alongside this, we have several outdoor learning areas across the school grounds, providing pupils with inspiring spaces to explore, discover and learn beyond the classroom.
WOW!
WOW (Walk Once a Week) is a flagship UK-wide primary school initiative run by the charity Living Streets. It encourages children and their families to walk, wheel, cycle, scoot, or “Park and Stride” to school at least once a week in exchange for collectable monthly badges.
How the Challenge Works
- Logging the Journey: Pupils self-report how they get to school each day using the interactive Wow travel tracker.
- Earning Badges: If a student completes an active/sustainable journey at least once a week for an entire month, they are rewarded with a unique collectable badge.
- Collectables: There are 11 different badges to earn throughout the year, designed by children in a national annual competition. They are made from recycled materials, including repurposed yoghurt pots

Our very own pupil Arlo’s design was selected to be created into the November badge for our walk to school program. Well done, Arlo!
