Victorian Day

On Monday 23rd April, Classes 9, 10 and 11 experienced a fantastic Victorian Day to launch our new topic, ‘Marvellous Morecambe’ in which we will be learning about the development of seaside towns, including Morecambe, during the Victorian era.

We experienced Victorian style lessons in the morning, including arithmetic, handwriting and an object lesson about potatoes. In the afternoon, we visited the Old Boys’ Grammar School in the village to look at the collection of Victorian toys and artefacts there. We also looked at extracts from the original school log books, discovering what life in school was like in 1875. Finally, we also played some games that Victorian children would have played: hopscotch, hoop and stick, marbles, jacks, pick-up-sticks and a potato race.

The children (and staff) had a great time, although we don’t think we would like Victorian lessons everyday!
